On this walk, you'll learn to tell a Creole Townhouse from a Shotgun House, spot the differences between French Colonial and Spanish Colonial construction, and understand why Benjamin Latrobe called this neighborhood a triumph of adaptation.

Garden District
Architecture Walking Tour
After the Louisiana Purchase, American newcomers flooded into a city that made it clear they weren't welcome. The Creole families shut them out of the Quarter. So the Americans acquired newly subdivided land upriver, hired the best architects money could buy, and built mansions so grand the whole city noticed. The Garden District is the result: block after block of Greek Revival columns, Italianate brackets, and Queen Anne turrets, all standing as they were 170 years ago. This is our most popular tour!
